Parenchymal organs are solid organs made mainly of functional tissue, called parenchyma, rather than being hollow tubes or sacs.
Examples include the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, lungs, brain, and thyroid.
  • Parenchyma: the cells that perform the organ’s main job. For example, liver cells process nutrients and toxins; kidney tissue filters blood.
  • Stroma: the supporting framework of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
In clinical use, “parenchymal organ injury” usually refers to injury of a solid organ, such as the liver, spleen, or kidney, often after abdominal trauma.

Seromucous glands are mixed exocrine glands that produce both:
  • Serous secretion: thin, watery fluid containing proteins and enzymes
  • Mucous secretion: thick, slippery secretion rich in mucin, which lubricates and protects surfaces
Their combined product is called seromucous secretion. It helps moisten surfaces, trap particles and microbes, and protect the lining of passages.
Examples:
  • Submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
  • Glands in the trachea and larger airways
  • Some glands of the nasal cavity and larynx
Under the microscope, they contain both serous secretory units (darker-staining cells) and mucous secretory units (paler cells).
