Here is a clear, practical guide on how to calculate gestational age (GA) when you only have the EDD.
Calculating Gestational Age from EDD Only
The Core Formula
A normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). The EDD is set at exactly 40 weeks from LMP. So:
GA (today) = 40 weeks - (EDD - Today's date)
Or in plain steps:
- Find the number of days remaining until the EDD from today
- Subtract that from 280 days
- Convert the result to weeks + days
Formula:
GA = 280 days - (EDD - Today)
→ express in weeks + days
Step-by-Step Example
- Today's date: 13 July 2026
- EDD given: 15 September 2026
Step 1: Count days from today to EDD
- 13 July → 15 September = 64 days remaining
Step 2: Subtract from 280
- 280 - 64 = 216 days elapsed
Step 3: Convert to weeks and days
- 216 ÷ 7 = 30 weeks and 6 days
Gestational Age = 30 weeks 6 days
Quick Mental Trick (Used in Indian Clinical Practice)
Since EDD = LMP + 280 days:
LMP = EDD - 280 days
Once you know the LMP, count forward from LMP to today to get the GA. This is the same result but it gives you an LMP reference for records.
Example:
- EDD = 15 Sept 2026
- LMP = 15 Sept 2026 - 280 days = 9 October 2025
- GA on 13 July 2026 = 13 July 2026 - 9 Oct 2025 = 216 days = 30 weeks 6 days ✓
Naegele's Rule (Background)
The EDD is calculated using Naegele's Rule:
EDD = LMP + 9 calendar months + 7 days
(or equivalently, LMP + 280 days)
This rule assumes a regular 28-day cycle. In India, this is the standard method used in all government antenatal cards (Mother & Child Protection card / MCH card).
Summary Table
| Days Remaining to EDD | Gestational Age |
|---|
| 280 days | 0 weeks (just conceived) |
| 210 days | 10 weeks |
| 140 days | 20 weeks |
| 70 days | 30 weeks |
| 14 days | 38 weeks |
| 0 days | 40 weeks (EDD) |
| -7 days (past EDD) | 41 weeks |
In Indian Government/RMNCH+A Settings
- The Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card records EDD on the first ANC visit
- Health workers (ASHA, ANM) are trained to calculate GA by counting back from EDD using the 40-week rule
- Trimester definitions used:
- 1st trimester: up to 13 weeks 6 days
- 2nd trimester: 14 weeks to 27 weeks 6 days
- 3rd trimester: 28 weeks onwards
When EDD May Be Unreliable
The EDD from LMP alone can be inaccurate if:
- Cycle length is irregular
- LMP was recalled incorrectly
In such cases, per [Creasy & Resnik's Maternal-Fetal Medicine](Creasy & Resnik's MATERNAL - FETAL MEDICINE, Principles and Practice), a first-trimester ultrasound CRL (crown-rump length) up to 13 weeks 6 days is the most accurate dating method (±5-7 days), and should be used to revise the EDD if there is a discrepancy of more than 7 days in the first trimester or more than 10 days in the second trimester.
Bottom line: GA from EDD only = 40 weeks minus the weeks/days remaining until EDD. This is universally applicable and is the method used by all ANMs, nurses, and doctors in India's public health system.
