open tibial shaft fracture tendon commonly injured tibialis anterior
In an open fracture of both bones of the leg (tibia and fibula), the tendon most commonly at risk in an anterior wound is the tibialis anterior tendon.
Other anterior-compartment tendons that may be cut are:
Extensor hallucis longus
Extensor digitorum longus
The actual tendon injured depends on the wound location. A posterior wound may involve the Achilles tendon instead. Examine ankle and toe dorsiflexion, dorsalis pedis pulse, and deep peroneal nerve sensation.
