I could not verify the exact wording from an A. K. Datta edition in the available library. The standard description used in Indian anatomy texts is:

- Intercostal nerves are the anterior primary rami of T1-T11.
- External and innermost intercostals have fibres directed downwards and forwards.
- Internal intercostal fibres run downwards and backwards, at right angles to external intercostal fibres.
- The neurovascular bundle lies between the internal and innermost intercostal layers.
- All three muscles extend between adjacent ribs and stabilize intercostal spaces during respiration.
