Oxytocin prophylaxis after vaginal delivery: 10 IU IM or IV to prevent postpartum hemorrhage.
- If an IV line is already in place: give 10 IU IV slowly over 1-2 minutes after birth.
- Otherwise: 10 IU IM.
Give during the third stage of labor, immediately after birth of the baby or following placental delivery, according to local protocol. WHO guidance prefers slow IV administration when IV access is already available. This is for prophylaxis, not treatment of established postpartum hemorrhage.
