hepatitis B vaccine birth dose within how many hours of birth WHO recommendation
"The birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine is effective in preventing perinatal transmission of Hepatitis B if given within the first 24 hours."
- Park's Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine, p. 503
| Situation | Timing |
|---|---|
| Mother HBsAg-negative (routine) | Within 24 hours of birth |
| Mother HBsAg-positive | Hep B vaccine + HBIG within 12 hours of birth |
| Mother HBsAg status unknown | Hep B vaccine within 12 hours of birth |
Note (July 2026): The US ACIP recently voted (late 2025) to make the birth dose optional for infants born to HBsAg-negative mothers, allowing parental choice. The AAP strongly opposed this change and continues to recommend the universal birth dose within 24 hours. WHO and India's NIS recommendations remain unchanged - the birth dose within 24 hours is still the standard worldwide.
