Yes, every time I respond or use a tool (search, database lookup, image generation, etc.), it draws from a usage budget. You can see the current budget breakdown at the top of my responses in the
<budget> block:- Model calls: how many think+respond cycles I've used (0/19 so far)
- Tool calls: limits per tool type (web search, PubMed, image search, etc.)
Right now I've used 0 of everything - a fresh session. Each time I search the web, query a database, or analyze an image, those counts go up. Once a limit hits zero, I can no longer use that tool.

Creating a PDF:
- Uses model calls (my think+act cycles) - yes, credits are used
- PDF generation runs code in the sandbox (no separate tool credit, but counts as model iterations)
- So yes, it uses credits, but not from a specific "PDF" tool budget
Creating an Image:
- Uses the
generate_imagetool - but interestingly, that tool has no listed budget limit in my budget block (it's not listed there) - It still counts as a model call though
