Tamra, Rajata, Swarna and Swarna Makshika Bhasma
General note
Bhasma is a calcined Ayurvedic metallic/mineral preparation. Preparation traditionally includes:
Shodhana (purification) → Marana (incineration/calcination) → Amritikarana where prescribed → Bhasma Pariksha (quality tests).
These preparations must only be made and prescribed by trained Ayurvedic Rasashastra practitioners using authenticated raw materials and pharmacopoeial quality testing. Unprocessed or inadequately processed metals/minerals can be harmful.
Common Bhasma Pariksha:
- Rekhapurnatva: powder enters the fine lines of the fingers.
- Varitaratva: a small quantity floats on still water.
- Unama: a grain placed over floating bhasma should also float.
- Nischandratva: no metallic lustre remains.
- Apunarbhava: should not revert to original metallic form.
- Niruttha: should not alloy with silver on strong heating.
1. Tamra Bhasma
Introduction
- Tamra means copper.
- It is included under Shuddha Loha in Rasashastra.
- Its accepted bhasma is generally a very fine reddish-black to blackish powder.
- Tamra requires careful purification and Amritikarana, as improperly prepared Tamra Bhasma is considered capable of producing adverse effects.
Shodhana of Tamra
Samanya Shodhana is done by heating thin Tamra sheets until red hot and quenching them successively, generally seven times each, in:
- Tila taila - sesame oil
- Takra - buttermilk
- Gomutra - cow urine
- Kanji - sour fermented gruel
- Kulattha kwatha - horse gram decoction
Then the sheets are washed, dried, and used for marana.
Marana of Tamra
A commonly taught outline:
- Take Shuddha Tamra in thin sheets or powder form.
- Triturate with Shuddha Gandhaka and a suitable liquid medium such as Nimbu swarasa or another prescribed bhavana dravya.
- Prepare small chakrikas/pellets.
- Dry them and subject them to Puta in a closed sharava-samputa.
- Repeat bhavana, chakrika formation, and puta until the powder becomes completely fine, lustreless, and fulfils bhasma tests.
Amritikarana
Tamra Bhasma is subjected to Amritikarana to reduce residual sharpness or toxicity. Different texts prescribe different methods, often involving trituration with substances such as Gandhaka and prescribed herbal or fatty media, followed by controlled heating.
Dose and Anupana
- Common textbook dose: 15-60 mg, depending on formulation and physician's judgement.
- Anupana varies with disease, such as Madhu, Ghrita, Trikatu, or suitable herbal decoction.

Precaution

2. Rajata Bhasma
Introduction
- Rajata means silver.
- Rajata is classified under Shuddha Loha.
- Proper Rajata Bhasma is generally a fine, lustreless greyish-black powder.
Shodhana of Rajata
Rajata sheets are heated to red hot and quenched, commonly seven times each, in the five media of samanya shodhana:
- Tila taila
- Takra
- Gomutra
- Kanji
- Kulattha kwatha
The purified silver is washed and dried.
Marana of Rajata
- Take purified Rajata in thin sheets or fine powder.
- Triturate with Shuddha Gandhaka and prescribed bhavana dravya, commonly Nimbu swarasa in many teaching methods.
- Make chakrikas and dry them.
- Keep in sharava-samputa and give suitable Puta.
- Repeat the process until a lustreless, very fine bhasma is obtained and all bhasma tests are satisfactory.

3. Swarna Bhasma
Introduction
- Swarna means gold.
- It is considered one of the most important Maharasa/Loha-derived Rasayana preparations in Ayurveda.
- Proper Swarna Bhasma is extremely fine, lustreless, and may appear reddish, brownish-red, or purple-red, depending on the method and ingredients used.
Shodhana of Swarna
Thin gold sheets are heated and quenched, generally seven times each, in:
- Tila taila
- Takra
- Gomutra
- Kanji
- Kulattha kwatha
Some classical methods use special media such as Triphala kwatha or other prescribed herbal liquids.
Marana of Swarna
The exact procedure varies among classical texts. A general examination answer may be written as:
- Take purified Swarna patra/varaka.
- Prepare suitable Kajjali using purified Parada and Gandhaka where the classical method requires it.
- Triturate gold with the prescribed marana materials and bhavana dravya, such as Kumari swarasa, Nimbu swarasa, or other text-specific media.
- Make chakrikas, dry properly, and place in sealed sharava-samputa.
- Give Laghu Puta or the prescribed Puta.
- Repeat the process until a fine, lustreless Swarna Bhasma satisfying bhasma pariksha is obtained.

- Common textbook dose: 1-15 mg, depending on the formulation, indication, age, strength, and physician's assessment.
- Common anupana: Madhu, Ghrita, milk, Brahmi swarasa, or disease-specific adjuvants.

Precaution
Swarna Bhasma should be used only in a verified classical product and at a physician-directed dose. It is not a routine nutritional supplement. The available modern clinical evidence does not establish it as a replacement for standard treatment of chronic disease.
4. Swarna Makshika Bhasma
Introduction
- Swarna Makshika is generally identified with chalcopyrite, a copper-iron sulphide mineral.
- It is classified under Uparasa.
- It is yellowish, shining, and resembles gold, hence the name Swarna Makshika.
- Properly prepared bhasma is usually reddish-brown, brown, or blackish-red, fine, and without metallic shine.
Shodhana of Swarna Makshika
A commonly described method:
- Break Swarna Makshika into small pieces or powder.
- Triturate with Nimbu swarasa or other prescribed acidic herbal medium.
- Subject it to heating/roasting in an iron pan or suitable apparatus according to the classical method.
- Repeat the process until the material becomes purified and suitable for marana.
Some methods mention bhavana with Nimbu swarasa and heating, while others use different prescribed liquids. The exact method should be followed according to the specific text or pharmacopeial standard.
Marana of Swarna Makshika
- Take Shuddha Swarna Makshika.
