Mechanism of Action (Dual Action)

Sucralfate (cytoprotective):
  • In acidic pH, polymerizes into a sticky gel that selectively adheres to ulcer/erosion sites
  • Acts as a physical barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile
  • Stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and mucus secretion
  • Does NOT neutralize acid (non-antacid)
Oxetacaine (local anesthetic):
  • A surface-active local anesthetic effective at low pH (unlike lidocaine)
  • Provides rapid relief of burning pain, heartburn, and epigastric discomfort
  • Works within 2-3 minutes of ingestion

Dosage

  • Adults: 10 mL (1 tablespoon) three to four times daily
  • Timing: 30-60 minutes before meals and at bedtime, on an empty stomach
  • Duration: 4-8 weeks for ulcer healing

Important Instructions

  • Take on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before meals)
  • Do not drink water immediately after taking (reduces effectiveness)
  • Do not take antacids within 30 minutes of this medicine
  • Other drugs should be taken 2 hours apart (sucralfate can bind and reduce absorption of fluoroquinolones, digoxin, phenytoin, warfarin, etc.)
  • Complete the full course even if symptoms resolve

Side Effects

  • Common: Constipation (most frequent), dry mouth
  • Less common: Nausea, gastric discomfort, flatulence, dizziness
  • Rare: Skin rash, hypersensitivity reactions

Contraindications / Cautions

  • Renal impairment - sucralfate contains aluminum; risk of aluminum toxicity/accumulation in chronic kidney disease or dialysis patients
  • Patients on dialysis should avoid or use with caution
  • Pregnancy - use only if clearly needed (consult physician)
  • Known hypersensitivity to any component
