Here is everything you need to know, clearly laid out.

You Do NOT Need to Restart the Series

This is the most important point. Missing or delaying a dose does NOT mean starting over from scratch. The hepatitis B vaccine series uses a "catch-up" rule — you simply continue from where you left off.
"An interruption in the schedule does not require restarting of the entire series or the addition of extra doses." — Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 22nd Ed.
"If the series is interrupted after the first dose, the second dose should be given as soon as possible, and the third dose at least 2 months after the second." — Hepatitis B Foundation

Your Situation at a Glance

Dose 117 March 2026✅ Done
Dose 2Should have been ~17 April❌ Missed (exams)

What to Do Now

Standard 3-Dose Schedule (Engerix-B / Recombivax — most common)

DoseWhen to Take ItApprox. Date
Dose 2As soon as possible — TODAY or this week~May 2, 2026
Dose 3At least 2 months after Dose 2 (minimum interval is 8 weeks), and at least 4 months after Dose 1~July 2026 or later
So your revised schedule looks like:
  • Dose 1: 17 March 2026
  • Dose 2: ~2 May 2026 (now)
  • Dose 3: ~2 July 2026 or later (at least 2 months after Dose 2)

Key Rules for the Schedule

  1. Dose 2 → Dose 3 minimum gap: 8 weeks (2 months)
  2. Dose 1 → Dose 3 minimum gap: 16 weeks (4 months) — Dose 3 in July satisfies this comfortably
  3. No upper time limit — there is no "too late" to continue the series, the protection just builds more slowly

If You Are Using Heplisav-B (2-Dose Vaccine)

Some countries/clinics use the CpG-adjuvanted 2-dose vaccine (Heplisav-B), which only requires:
  • Dose 1 → Dose 2: 1 month apart
If this is what you were given, your Dose 2 is still simply taken now (just slightly delayed), and the series is complete.
Check your vaccination record or ask your doctor/pharmacist which brand was used.

Summary in Simple Steps

  1. Go get Dose 2 as soon as possible — today or within the next few days. The 1.5-month delay is fine.
  2. Wait at least 2 months after Dose 2.
  3. Get Dose 3 in approximately July 2026.
  4. You will be fully protected after completing all 3 doses.
No restarting. No extra doses needed. Just carry on.
