NTRUHS MDS Exam - Answer Writing Tips

Know the Exam Format First

• You get a single 64-page answer booklet - use it wisely.
• All questions are compulsory (Answer ALL questions).

Long Essay (25 marks) - Strategy

1. Start with a definition or brief introduction (2-3 lines). Examiners want to see you know the scope of the topic immediately.
2. Write a clear outline/skeleton first - list subheadings before you write. This keeps your answer structured and saves time if you run out later.
3. Subheadings are mandatory - use them liberally. Examiners skim; subheadings make your answer appear thorough.
4. Include a diagram or flowchart wherever relevant - classification tables, pathogenesis flowcharts, operative steps, etc. Even a rough diagram earns marks and breaks up text.
5. Target word count: ~500-700 words + diagrams for a 25-mark answer.
6. Use the standard format for clinical topics:
   • Definition - Classification - Etiopathogenesis - Clinical features - Diagnosis - Treatment - Prognosis/Recent advances

Short Essay (10 marks) - Strategy

1. Be precise and focused - do not pad with unnecessary intro.
2. Start with definition, then cover 3-4 key points with subheadings.
3. A labeled diagram is often worth 2-3 marks on its own.
4. Target: ~200-300 words. Do not exceed this; move on to the next question.
5. Avoid writing an essay-style paragraph dump - bullet points and subheadings work better here.

Time Management (3-hour paper)

• Total: 2 LEs (65-70 min) + 5 SEs (75 min) + buffer = ~155 min - fits within 3 hours.
• Stick to time strictly. A half-written answer on Q7 is better than a perfect Q1 with Q7 left blank.

Presentation Tips

• Blue/black pen only - use one pen for body text, a different-colored pen (or underline) for subheadings.
• Leave margins - examiners write marks on the sides.
• Number each answer clearly at the top and draw a line separating answers.
• Legibility > speed - neat, spaced-out handwriting scores more than cramped rushed text.
• Label all diagrams fully - partial labels lose marks.
• Avoid overwriting or scribbling - draw a single line through mistakes.

Content Tips Specific to MDS

• Always include classification - NTRUHS examiners expect the most recent or commonly used classification (e.g., WHO 2022 for tumors, AAP 2017 for periodontal diseases, etc.).
• Recent advances / newer concepts - dedicate the last paragraph of every long essay to current concepts. This differentiates a 20/25 from a 25/25.
• Evidence-based dentistry - cite landmark studies or clinical guidelines by name (e.g., "According to the Cochrane review...") without necessarily needing exact numbers.
• Basic sciences questions (Paper I / Part I) - for anatomy, physiology, biochemistry questions: draw clear, labeled anatomical diagrams. These papers are more scoring than clinical papers if approached systematically.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Writing everything in continuous paragraphs (hard to read, hard to mark).
• Spending 50+ minutes on the first long essay and rushing the rest.
• Forgetting to attempt all 7 questions - an unattempted question scores zero.
• Writing the answer and then adding a diagram as an afterthought at the end - integrate diagrams within the answer flow.
• Repeating the question back to the examiner as an introduction - get to the point.

Final Checklist Before Submitting

• All 7 questions attempted?
• Each answer numbered and separated?
• Diagrams labeled?
• Name/Hall ticket on the cover page?
• Any skipped space filled with a cancellation line?

Word Count Target

• 50 marks = aim for 900-1,200 words + 2-3 diagrams per essay.
• That is roughly 12-15 pages of a standard answer booklet per essay.
• With a 64-page booklet, both essays fit comfortably at ~28-30 pages combined, leaving buffer.

Key Rules to Follow

1. Do NOT spend more than 80 minutes on Essay 1 under any circumstance - even if you feel you have more to write. An incomplete Essay 2 kills your score.
2. Set a mental alarm at the 85-minute mark - by then Essay 1 must be done and Essay 2 started.
3. Write your skeleton first (5 min) - if time runs short later, at least the subheadings are there and the examiner can see your thought process.
4. Diagrams during writing, not after - do not save all diagrams for the end. Draw them as you reach that section so time pressure does not cut them out.
5. Leave 20 minutes at the end - use it to add missed points, complete any diagram labels, and write a "Recent Advances" paragraph if skipped earlier.
