\frac{\text{Number of VAP episodes in the period}}{\text{Total ventilator-days in the same period}}
\times 1000
]
Example:
If an ICU reports 4 VAP cases over 800 ventilator-days:
[
\frac{4}{800} \times 1000 = 5
]
VAP rate = 5 per 1,000 ventilator-days.
A ventilator-day is counted as one patient receiving mechanical ventilation for any portion of a calendar day. The CDC NHSN manual uses this incidence-density calculation.
