I went to the swimming pool and i my eyes started hurting so they are red now

Red, irritated eyes after swimming are most likely caused by chlorine (or chloramines) in the pool water irritating the conjunctiva. This is very common and usually resolves on its own within a few hours.
What's likely happening:
  • Pool chlorine reacts with sweat/urine to form chloramines, which are harsher on eyes than chlorine alone
  • The water's pH can also irritate the tear film and conjunctival surface
What you can do right now:
  1. Rinse your eyes with clean, cool water or saline (sterile eye wash) for a few minutes - this helps flush out the irritant
  2. Use lubricating/artificial tear eye drops (available over the counter) to soothe dryness and irritation
  3. Avoid rubbing your eyes - this makes irritation worse
  4. Rest your eyes - avoid screens for a bit if they feel strained
  5. Cold compress - a cool, damp cloth over closed eyes can reduce discomfort
When to see a doctor:
  • Redness/pain persists beyond 24 hours
  • Vision becomes blurry
  • You notice a thick yellow/green discharge (could indicate bacterial infection)
  • Significant swelling of the eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
Going forward: Wearing swim goggles next time will protect your eyes completely from pool water.
You should feel better within a few hours. If symptoms are still present tomorrow morning, it's worth getting checked by a doctor or pharmacist.
