Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are one of the leading causes of injury and death globally and pose a serious public health concern, especially in developing countries like India. A road traffic accident is defined by the World Health Organization as “incident involving at least one moving vehicle on a public road that results in injury, death or damage.” (1) Road crashes claim around 1.3 million lives globally each year, with 20–50 million more suffering non-fatal injuries. Low- and middle-income countries, including India, account for over 90% of these deaths despite having only 60% of the world’s vehicles. In 2022, India reported over 4.6 lakh road accidents, causing 1.7 lakh deaths and 4.4 lakh injuries—a 6.1% rise in fatalities from the previous year. Accident severity stood at 36.5 deaths per 100 accidents. Adults aged 18–45 made up nearly two-thirds of the fatalities, indicating a major loss of individuals in their most productive years. (2) In the state of Gujarat, despite various road safety efforts, road traffic accidents remain a serious concern. In 2023, Gujarat recorded more than 16,000 accidents, causing approximately 7,850 deaths. This represents a 3% increase in fatalities from the previous year. Although the number of accidents has declined in the past decade, the number of people dying due to these accidents has shown a steady rise (3).
