What it most likely means
The key abnormality is raised white cells with raised neutrophils, called neutrophilic leukocytosis. This often occurs with a recent or current infection, particularly bacterial infection, inflammation, physical stress, smoking, or certain medicines such as corticosteroids. The mildly high RBC/HCT can sometimes reflect dehydration, smoking, or low-oxygen states. It needs clinical context and may simply be rechecked when well hydrated.
What to do
- Show this report to the treating doctor, especially if there is fever, cough, urinary burning, abdominal pain, tooth infection, wounds, or other symptoms.
- If he is otherwise well, the doctor may repeat the CBC, often with a peripheral blood smear, after the acute illness or dehydration has resolved.
- Seek prompt medical care if there is high or persistent fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, or worsening symptoms.
The platelet count and haemoglobin are reassuringly normal.
